Repair or Replace? How to Tell When Your Boiler Has Had Its Day
A broken boiler doesn't automatically mean a new boiler. Here is how an honest engineer decides — age, parts, efficiency and the real cost of each option.

When a boiler stops, it’s tempting to assume the worst. But most breakdowns are repairable — a pump, a fan, a sensor, a diverter valve. Several of David’s customers say he got their boiler running “for much less than replacing”. So how do you know which way to go?
Repair usually makes sense when…
- The boiler is under 10–12 years old and has been serviced.
- It’s a single, common part that’s still available.
- The boiler has been reliable until now.
- The repair costs a fraction of a new installation.
Replacement starts to make sense when…
- The boiler is 15+ years old and breaking down every winter.
- Parts are discontinued or very expensive.
- It’s an old non-condensing model — modern boilers can use noticeably less fuel for the same heat.
- There’s a safety issue with the heat exchanger or flue.
Questions to ask any engineer
- What exactly has failed, and why?
- What does the repair cost, and how long is it likely to last?
- If I replace, what size and type of boiler do I actually need?
- Will my radiators, pump and controls need work too?
A good engineer answers all four in plain English — no pressure, no “special price if you sign today”.
Thinking beyond a like-for-like swap
If you’re replacing an old oil boiler, it’s worth asking about better controls, a system power flush, and whether your home might suit a heat pump in future. Check SEAI for current home energy grants before you decide — schemes change, and some upgrades are supported.
